In einem Aquarium sollte man ihnen eine ausgewogene Ernährung mit lebenden, gefrorenen und gefriergetrockneten Daphnien, Artemia Pflege und Zucht im Aquarium. Der Melanotaenia lacustris ist ein Regenbogenfisch der nicht besonders anspruchsvoll ist in der Haltung und Pflege. Man sollte aber auch hier häufigen Wasserwechsel durchführen, spätestens nach 14 Tagen (abhängig vom Besatz). Man kann ohne weiteres 50 % des Altwassers gegen Frischwasser ersetzen.
