Rooted in the tropical underground of Los Angeles nightlife, Wildness is a portrait of the Silver Platter, a historic bar that has been home to Latin/LGBT immigrant communities since 1963. With a magical-realist flourish the bar itself becomes a character, narrating what happens when a weekly party (organized by Director Wu Tsang, DJs NGUZUNGUZU, and Total Freedom) called Wildness explodes For the above reasons, I immediately identified with the character Wu (portrayed by the filmmaker Wu Tsang) who appears at the beginning of Wildness, arriving expectantly at the doors of the Silver Platter, a legendary bar in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, and the longstanding home away from home for a community of Latina, largely immigrant, transgender women. With a magical-realist flourish - the bar itself becomes a character in the film - Wildness captures the creativity and conflict that ensue when a group of young Wu Tsang is a filmmaker and performance artist who combines documentary and narrative techniques with fantastical detours into the imaginary in works that explore hidden histories, marginalized narratives, and the act of performing itself.
