Aida, who returns Radamès love, is the daughter of the Ethiopian King Amonasro, an identity hidden from her Egyptian captors. Amneris, the daughter of Pharaoh, enters. She also loves Radamès, but fears that Aida may be her rival. Pharaoh enters, with the High Priest, and the whole court, to news that the Ethiopians are marching on Thebes. The story. Act I. The Ethiopian princess Aida has been captured and enslaved, but her captors do not know of her importance. Radames is a commander in the Egyptian army and is in love with Aida, but also wants to be victorious on the battlefield - Aida's father, the Ethiopiann King Amonasro, is invading Egypt in order to find and free his daughter. Aida, ACT 1. Outside of the royal palace near Memphis, Ramfis (Egypt's high priest) informs Radames (a young warrior) that armies from Ethiopia are making their way towards the Nile valley. Radames expresses his hope of being appointed the commander of Egypt's army where he can lead his troops to victory, as well as rescue Aida, his Ethiopian AIDA Thy brow may laurels crown! what! can my lips Pronounce language so impious! wish him Victor o'er my father! o'er him who wages war But that I may be restored to my country, To my kingdom, to the high station I now perforce dissemble! wish him conqueror O'er my brothers! e'en now I see him stained With their blood so cherished, 'mid the clamorous Triumph of Egyptian battalions! would enable him to set his beloved free. Amneris realizes that Radamès is in love with her slave. When the king does appoint Radamès to lead the army, Aida finds herself torn between two loves: for Radamès and for her Ethiopian homeland. In a grand ceremony, Ramfis appoints Radamès the new commander.
