Ipomoea jalapa (L.) Pursh is one of several distantly related New World Ipomoea that comprise a group of purgative medicinals known in the vernacular as "jalaps". Linnaeus (1 767a, 1767b) published the species under the genus Convolvulus simultaneously in the twelfth edition of his Systema Naturae The root known as High John the Conqueror is (supposed to be) the root of Ipomoea jalapa, an Ipomoea species related to the morning glory and the sweet potato. The plant is known in some areas as bindweed or jalap root. It has a pleasant, earthy odour, but it is a strong laxative if taken internally. We describe the traditional production system of the root of jalapa, Ipomoea purga, in Xico, Veracruz, Mexico. The results are based on open interviews with the producers to gather information on the development of this crop in the area, and observation of the production system. The production cycle is carried out between July and February.
