Prix de Rome, any of a group of scholarships awarded by the French government between 1663 and 1968 to enable young French artists to study in Rome.It was so named because the students who won the grand, or first, prize in each artistic category went to study at the Académie de France in Rome.. Etymology. gleditsia: Named after Johann Gottlieb Gleditsch (1714-1786) medical doctor and past director of the Berlin Botanic Gardens. Noteworthy Characteristics. Gleditsia triacanthos, commonly called honey locust, is native from Pennsylvania to Iowa south to Georgia and Texas. It typically grows 60-80' (less frequently to 120') tall with a rounded spreading crown. Trunk and branches have stout thorns (to 3" long) that are solitary or three-branched. The Dutch Prix de Rome is based on the originally French Prix de Rome and is awarded annually to architects and artists younger than 35.
