The first tincture of the mind is of the utmost importance to virtue; and it was the happiness of this saint to receive from his cradle the strongest impressions of piety by the example and care of his illustrious and holy parents. He was born at Chateau-neuf, in the territory of Valence, in Dauphine, in 1053. St. Hugh died on April 1, 1132, surrounded by his fellow monks and followers, who mourned his passing deeply. St. Hugh's body was interred in the church of the Carthusian monastery in Portes, where it remained until the French Revolution, when the monastery was disbanded and the church fell into disrepair.
