It is the same species of eel that is found throughout Europe. Each year a percentage of the eel stock in Lough Neagh Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the UK and Ireland, has been blighted by toxic blue-green algae since June. It supplies half of Belfast's drinking water and 40% of NI's overall supply. A vast blue-green algae is choking Lough Neagh, which supplies 40% of Northern Ireland's drinking water, owing to excessive farm slurry, human sewage discharges and other management blunders. Native cattle breeds are being used by the farmers. Almost 150 farmers have banded together to improve water quality and wildlife habitat on the shore and along rivers which flow into Lough Neagh.
