Treatment of filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti or Brugia malayi † (roundworms). Diethylcarbamazine (available in the US from CDC) is the drug of choice. Less than 60 kg: 15 mg/kg/day orally in divided doses twice a day with meals. Maximum dose: 800 mg/day. 60 kg or more: 400 mg orally twice a day with meals. Duration of therapy: 28-day cycle followed by a 14-day drug-free interval, for a total of 3 cycles. Use: For the treatment of cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum due Zentel(albendazole): Infestations of all common worms eg, roundworm, whipworm, hookworm, pinworm, threadworm & tapeworm. Adult & childn >2 yr Roundworm, whipworm, hookworm & pinworm 400 mg as single dose. Threadworm & tapeworm 400 mg as single dose for 3 consecutive days. Childn 12-24 mth ½ adult dose. Albendazole comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with food twice a day. When albendazole is used to treat neurocysticercosis, it is usually taken for 8 to 30 days. When albendazole is used to treat cystic hydatid disease, it is usually taken for 28 days, followed by a 14-day break, and repeated for a total of three cycles. Albendazole is a broad-spectrum antihelmintic and antiprotozoal agent of the benzimidazole type.
