Azaria Mbatha (1941-2018) was born in South Africa, in what was then Zululand, but became a citizen of Sweden in the late 1960s. He was an artist, known primarily for his linocuts. Sometimes the name appears as Azaria Mbatha or Azariah and Azaria J.C. Mbatha. In 1967, a striking yet slight work by a South African artist named Azaria Mbatha was donated to the Museum of Modern Art. The richly patterned black and white work on paper, printed from a simple Azaria Mbatha, who passed away in June, will be remembered by most art lovers for his unique style. The recent death of Azaria Mbatha (77), who came from humble beginnings, to stamp his signature Azaria Mbatha's life and work is well documented in print and on the web, thus we have concentrated on his involvement with Gallery 101 and Gallery 21, Johannesburg, during the 60s and 80s.
