November 14, 2019. The British built Fort Stanwix during the French and Indian War in 1758. After the end of the war, the fort was of little use to the British and was left to rot. The fort was seemingly unimportant until its location became of great strategic importance during the American Revolutionary War. Known as "the fort that never surrendered," Fort Stanwix, under the command of Col. Peter Gansevoort, successfully repelled a prolonged siege, in August 1777, by British, German, Loyalist, Canadian, and American Indian troops and warriors commanded by British Gen. Barry St. Leger.
