Mount Rogers NRA contains Virginia's loftiest terrain, namely 5,729 foot Mount Rogers, the highest point in Virginia and part of the nationally renowned Mount Rogers High Country, a melding of rare spruce-fir forest, open meadows, wild ponies and Mt. Best Time of Year to Hike: March - October, though technically, all seasons are doable for Mt. Rogers. Spring and fall are pleasant, summer may be a tad hot during the height of the day, but should be completely bearable. The 6.2-mile Mount Rogers Trail begins near the recreation area along Laurel Valley Road. There is a small parking area along the road. The strenuous hike includes a whopping 2,400' ascent to the summit of Mount Rogers. The good news: it's downhill the entire trek back.
