According to Domesday Book there was a priest at Basford in 1086 so it is almost certain the church was founded before 1126, which Thomas Bailey incorrectly gives as the date in his Annals of Nottinghamshire. St Leodegarius is one of only four Churches dedicated to this saint. The Church was originally built around 1180. Although there has been considerable rebuilding in the intervening 9 centuries. Significant work was undertaken in the 1850's. The original tower collapsed in 1859. This is the restored tower. As originally built the tower had 8 pinnacles.
