A stumpery is a special garden that uses stumps, logs and pieces of wood to create a special environment for plants. The wood is as important, if not more important than the plants. Other new stumperies have appeared at locations like Sizergh castle, Cumbria, and Burnby Hall Gardens, Yorkshire. Stumps of oak, yew and sweet chestnut trees blown down in the great storm of 1987 were used to redevelop an area within the Arundel Castle gardens in Sussex. Added colour came from a group of liquidambar trees. the death of Queen Victoria, stumperies fell out of fashion in favor of modern styles. But, once again, stumperies are back in style and can lend old-fashioned graciousness and romance to your landscape. You don't need acres of ground to create a stumpery. A small shady corner of your lot with a few pieces of wood is all you need to get started. Step 3. How to make a stumpery - firming the logs. Replace soil around the logs and fill any gaps with soil. Firm around the stumpery with your feet. Plant ferns around the logs to add interest. Discover 10 ferns to grow. Install shade-loving plants. Mulch the exposed areas with 2 to 3 inches of wood chips to mimic the leaf litter that is normally present in a woodland.
