Marcet, Jane Haldimand (1769-1858) The classical political economist Jane Haldimand Marcet was born in London, the eldest of ten children Anthony (Antoine) Haldimand, a Swiss citizen who was successful London banker and property developer, his English wife, Jane Pickersgill. She was tutored at Jane Haldimand married Dr. Alexander Marcet in 1799, a union that lasted until his death in 1822. The comfortable economic positioning of first Marcet's father and later her husband meant that she could write simply as a means of finding personal fulfillment and to be useful to others, rather than having to produce manuscripts to make money. Born to a merchant and later banker father in London in 1769, Jane Marcet (formerly Haldimand) leveraged the privileges of her wealthy upbringing and eventual marriage to a physician and scientist to become a prolific writer of books on science and political economy. Marcet's father, Anthony Francis Haldimand, offered his daughters a home Jane Marcet (née Haldimand) was an innovative, successful writer of popular introductory science books.
