During the summer of 1869, Monet and Renoir set up their easels at La Grenouillère, a boating and bathing resort on the Seine River, not far from Paris. Their subject was La Grenouillère (literally "frogpond"). Situated on the banks of the Île de Croissy on the Seine near Paris (opposite Bougival), La Grenouillère was an elegant establishment built on a barge and combining bathing cabins and a restaurant. In September 1869 Monet wrote to Frederic Bazille (1841-70) saying that he had made some bad oil sketches (pochades) of La Grenouillere.These sketches are probably this painting and its sister - a less developed pochade - Bathers at La Grenouillere (1869, National Gallery, London). The broad, loose brushstrokes here are evidently those of a sketch.
