The genus name, Juniperus, is derived from the Latin word for juniper. The epithet, scopulorum, is from the Latin word that translates "of the cliffs or rock' and refers to the species mountainous habitat. The Rocky Mountain Juniper prefers full sun, moist, well-drained soils and especially does well in dry, sandy soil. 'Skyrocket' is a cultivar of the Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum), which is a species also known as western red cedar, though it isn't a true cedar (Cedrus spp.). This cultivar was first introduced in 1949 at Schuel Nursery in South Bend, Indiana, and was originally called 'Pilaris 1' before it was renamed. Additional Information. 'Skyrocket' has an extremely narrow, fastigiate form and silvery blue-green foliage. Widely adapted to soils and climates. Does well in alkaline soils, but not wet soils. Alternate host for cedar-apple rust disease. Plant other juniper species in areas having many apples, hawthorns, etc. Susceptible to bagworms. Most of us survive a bad haircut, but skyrocket juniper (Juniperus scopulorum "Skyrocket") may not. This stately columnar evergreen grows rapidly to 20 feet in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 though 9, but rarely exceeds 20 inches in width.
