One of the first pieces I saw done by Flatmo and leaning towards this aesthetic was a mural in Eureka on the side of a sporting goods store called Bucksport (figure 2). Flatmo painted this mural in 1996. There is a strong emphasis on particular facial features and emotion within the El Pulpo Mecanico emerged from Arcata, California, in the redwood filled expanse of Humboldt County. Crafted by the mind and hands of Duane Flatmo and his compatriot Jerry Kunkel, El Pulpo Mecanico blends artistry, plumbing and brute force construction.. A fusion of imagination and engineering, El Pulpo dances to the rhythm of its own flames. With a giant cam at its heart, the tentacles Pierson's Building Center at the south end of Eureka on U.S. Highway 101 features Flatmo's unique skill in painting aspects of his murals with people painted in "real time" activities, painted Flatmo paints the town.
