Opening in 1934, thanks to vision of "Barras Queen" Maggie McIver, the building was largely destroyed by fire in 1958. An episode of Come Dancing in September 1962 also came from the Barrowland Ballroom. Around 5.30am on 19 August 1958, only months after Maggie McIver had died, a fire began in the tearoom. Within Barrowland Roar, which will be shown on BBC Alba on New Year's Day, sees Lewis-based musician Iain "Spanish" Mackay venture behind the scenes to hear recollections of playing the Barras. Here some Barrowland facts I put together for my tour: 1. The Barrowland was built in 1934 by Margaret McIver - the matriarch of a family of nine children, who originally bought the land and established the market for traders and their "Barras". The market was covered in 1926 and completely enclosed by 1931. The Barrowland first opened in the city's Gallowgate in 1934 as a dance hall, and was rebuilt in 1960 after a fire. Following a brief spell as a roller rink it took its place as the city's leading gig venue in the 80s. Though these days there are many on the circuit, it's never lost that magic.
