We report herein a novel pathway for oxidation of 9-phenanthrenol, giving an unprecedented ketal structure. 9-Fluorenone and its derivatives can be synthesized in good to high yields with good functional group tolerance using the ketal or 9-phenanthrenols as substrates. Decomposition and formation processes of the ketal have been investigated. The production of 9-Fluorenol was confirmed by percent yield, IR comparison, MP comparison, and mixed solvent recrystallization. 2. Data and Results: 1. Substitution: After 7 drops of 4 Sodium borohydride were added to 3 mL of 0 9-Fluorenone in methanol solution, the solution was allowed to stir for several minutes. After a little bit of time Fluorenone is bright fluorescent yellow solid at standard conditions. Availability. Fluorenone is sold by chemical suppliers. Preparation. Fluorenone can be prepared from fluorene via the addition of glacial acetic acid and sodium hypochlorite solution, undergoing an oxidation reaction. Projects.
