A Little History. For 300 years the Hambleton Inn has been Yorkshire's most Sporting Inn. The White Horse, at Kilburn, just below Hambleton, symbolises the centuries old racing tradition of the area, with the Hambleton Inn at its heart. The Hambleton plateau was the finest natural racecourse in the country. It was second in importance only to Debra Alms. The lovingly restored Hambleton Inn finally opened to visitors on September 1. The renovation process uncovered old beams carved by shipbuilders and revealed numerous artifacts, some hidden in the walls, including old elixir druggist bottles, Austrian porcelain, and crockery dating to the 1800s. The new owners rebuilt bathrooms and The Hambleton Inn is the only surviving hostelry on the A170. The Dialstone Inn near Sutton Bank is now a farmhouse. Limekiln House, a wayside inn, now in ruins, was once the centre of the lime-burning and distribution trade. The inn was known as the resort of smugglers and sheep stealers.
