Hiking in Olompali State Historic Park. Once you're here, there are lots of hikes you can do in the park. The 2.4-mile Miwok Loop Trail will take you up the lower hillside of Mount Burdell. If you're looking for something more challenging, you can do the 9-mile loop trail to the peak, which reaches an altitude of 1,558 feet. History. Being a state historic park, you'd expect Olompali to have a number of features of historic interest in addition to trails, and you'd be right. Olompali was the site of possibly the largest Coast Miwok village in what is now Marin County. The park boasts a recreated "Miwok Village" showing examples of the structures built by the Miwok for shelter and storage. Scottish James Black (1810-1870) became the County's first tax assessor, judge, and coroner, and its second largest landowner. In 1852 he bought the Olompali Rancho from Camilo Ynitia for $5,200. Ynitia sold most of his granted land at Olompali to the Marin County assessor to prevent his land grant from being taken under American rule. Olompali State Park is a historic site, beginning with the Miwok tribe dating back to 6000BC. It currently features Miwok village re-creations, the adobe remnants of the last Miwok owner (Camilo Yinitia), and the later ranch dwellings of the Burdell family. Burdell Mountain hike via Loop/Miwok trail. Covering almost the entirety of the park The Olompali State Park Loop starts near the iron ranger and heads towards a group of buildings. After you pass the dairy barn you will make a left onto the Lower Mount Burdell Trail. Continue on the Lower Mount Burdell Trail until you reach a fork in the road, keep right to switch to the Miwok Trail.
