The Conference Board of Canada issued a report Thursday that estimated Canada's paper products industry will lose about$400 million this year — the third straight year of losses. AbitibiBowater The facility, which employs a total of 545 people, has an annual capacity of 147,000 metric tons of pulp and 149,000 metric tons of paper as well as 60,000 metric tons of premium tissue. The company has been trying to renegotiate about $2.9 billion in the debts of its Canadian division, Abitibi-Consolidated, and $1.8 billion US of a U.S. division, Bowater Inc. Forest products The plant was built in 1957 by Bowater. That company went through a 2007 merger with Abitibi and a 2011 bankruptcy before reorganizing as Resolute Forest Products. Resolute sold the plant to New Bowater purchases the Mersey paper mill in Liverpool (Nova Scotia). 1959 Bowater starts up a kraft pulp mill in Catawba (South Carolina). 1961 Price acquires the Anglo Newfoundland Development (AND) Company, which owns the Grand Falls (Newfoundland) and Chandler (Quebec) mills. 1965 Abitibi Power and Paper is renamed Abitibi Paper Company. 1965 Abitibi-Bowater is the latest in a string of owners for the paper mill, which began operating in 1940 as Southland Paper Mills Inc.
