The ' Obby 'Oss festival (/ ˈ ɒ b i ˈ ɒ s /) is a folk custom that takes place each 1st of May in Padstow, a coastal town in North Cornwall.It involves two separate processions making their way around the town, each containing an eponymous hobby horse known as the 'Obby 'Oss.. The festival starts at midnight on the 30th of In 1927 some disagreed with the Oss being taken out of Cornwall and also having to wear EFDS standard white slacks and shirts (Morris-style). It is interesting also that by reifying Padstow May Day music, song and dance, the English Folk Song and Dance Society (EFDSS) may have made some feel the event was being taken out of its annual spontaneous community rite. The ancient tradition saw two 'Obby 'Oss, wooden hobby horse costumes, return to Cornwall for the event. People cheered at the May Day celebration when the blue ribbon 'Oss arrived at about 10:00 The 'Obby 'Oss is the inspiration for the song "Padstow" by folk group Steeleye Span.
